Our new obsession…..
So maybe I’m a bit late but I have just recently discovered the Acai Bowl. If you haven’t discovered it yet it is a smoothie bowl made with Acai Berries (these come frozen or in a powder form which you mix with other frozen berries of your choice) topped with nutrient packed nuts, seeds and fruit.. Acai is an indigenous berry commonly found in the rain forests of the Amazon. This antioxidant-rich fruit has been heralded for centuries as a healing, immune-stimulating, energy-boosting fruit. Research has shown that this antioxidant-rich berry may be able to fight the health problems associated with oxidative damage, not to mention many other health benefits.
I first discovered the bowls at a local food van in Dunsborough called “Kona Joe’s Health Shack” These girls make some seriously good healthy food from smoothies to bliss balls to the Acai Bowls. After trying a few my favourite has to be the “sunset beach” topped with banana, peanut butter and Cocowhip.
If you want to make one at home it’s really quite simple, you can readily buy the Acai powder from most health food stores (and even Coles) but my recipe uses the frozen berries which I purchase from Southwest Provisions. Here’s my recipe:
ACAI BOWL
Ingredients:
1 x packet of frozen acai berries roughly chopped
1 x frozen banana roughly chopped
A splash of coconut water or coconut milk
Toppings:
1 tbspn pepitas
1 tbspn sliced almonds
2 tbspn goji berries
1 tspn bee pollen
3-4 strawberries sliced
½ banana sliced
3 tbspn coconut yoghurt or yoghurt of your choice
Drizzle of peanut butter
Method:
Place acai berries, frozen banana and splash of coconut water/milk into a high speed blender and blend until smooth, scraping sides as necessary.
Put into bowl and top with remaining ingredients, you can chop and change the toppings to your liking.
